2013 - Getting started

3rd week of Feb - First real weekend of jobs due to a kind weekend of weather (no rain, nice ground-drying wind & 9 degrees) following some cold & we weekends.
Also a bonus that the nice weather coincided with a rest week in the 6 Nations so I wasn't torn between TV & plot.

2 beds dug over - the ones with the green manure. Neither looked particularly like they were about to set seed, but I wanted to get them rotting down. The forage peas didn't spread as much as the rye grass so it needs to be sown in rows about 4 inches apart next year. Neither the peas nor the grass did very well with sowings that were made after the middle of October, so both need to be sown a good 2 weeks before the first frosts.

The ground was still pretty wet towards the back of the plot & difficult to dig. I haven't gone near the new bit yet as its lower lying & still a bit swampy.

decided this weekend to renege on my decision not to grow spuds. The best results I've had have been with Kestrel, ( or possibly reds) so I've heavily manured the back bed near the plum trees and I'll have a bed of second earlies - off to Grundy's tomorrow to get some seed potatoes chitting.

I've put a step over fence around the main plot - just over 1 foot high - so that there is a hard edge to strim against. I've not decided whether the rabbits will be bothered about jumping over it yet. i'll wait until I see evidence of them nibbling before I fortify myself in with chicken wire.

I've also put a couple of trellis arches up at the gate to grow something fragrant, possibly sweet peas but they might be a bit too low, or possibly just beans.

The most exciting picture below is the huge pile of poo that has arrived - so big it's blocking the gate. this apparently weighs 14 tons, & cost the Society £30. I'll be down there tomorrow with my barrow.
